Hyper-v standalone or role

Any major advantages of having Hyper-v as standalone as oppose to having it run as a role in server 2008?

I think that standalone version allows live-migration of VM's to another host i.e. whilst they are running. You also don't need to have the license for the host Server2008R2 machine, just any clients you add which should save on costs I imagine.

 

I would also guess that having to not run up Server2008 first will free up more resources on the system

Hyper-V server (standalone) is equivilent to a cutdown install of server enterprise core so it supports clustering of roles and filesystems to enable migration/failover just like enterprise. Liscencing does not really matter in these terms as enterprise gives you four VM's and one to host so using up a liscence to host is not a concern. Its just easier if you are managing it locally to have it as a role. You can use the same managment tools just installed on another server or client to manage them just the same. Using the System Centre Virtual manager stuff allows you to setup the migration stuff if you have them clustered.
