Anyone using ipads for students. Maybe in a trolley or storage unit?

We had an Education specialist from Apple in yesterday, I didn't realise (according to the license agreement) that because Apple don't yet have a volume license program in the UK, we're supposed to be buying Apps once for each iPad... he was well aware schools were breaking it though.

 

Also, I was sceptical about using iPads in schools, but the man was right. You shouldn't be sitting down and thinking "now, what can I do with these iPads?" it should be used more as a tool. As a primary school we could be doing a certain theme such as the Romans or the Olympics and the children should be able to pick which tool they would use to create movies, do research, make presentations or whatever. I'll be trialling a few out before we go full hog though.

Can anyone clarify how you purchase multiple copies of an app? We have 2 sets of 16 ipads coming, and we are now ok with setting them up, having 1 itunes account and synching them, and using the config utility to lock them down to a certain extent.

 

We were then advised to buy the app once on the account which we use, and then buy it as a gift another 15 times for each set, but not claim the gift. This seemed to make sense - we could prove we had purchsed 16 copies. However we have since been advised that you cannot purchase gifts using itunes cards, only with a credit card. Is this the case? - If so with a £500 credit limit on the school credit card, its going to take us months to buy all the apps we need!

So, I was just looking something up... and it seems iCloud [such lame names] can sync up to 10 devices. [Apps, music, books, whatever]

 

Perhaps, there'll be an business version that has no limit [or a massively big limit.]

Is this easy to set up or does it rely on some hard work?

 

None at all - I have an iMac here with iTunes on it, and I've simply plugged them in and registered them. No issues with that many so far.

Apologies, the reason we have ours in sets of of 10 is for the iCloud limit, not the iTunes account synch limit (I will edit my post accordingly should anyone else come along to read it!)

It's still a shoddy system though and really unclear so schools will inevitably be inadvertently breaking the rules.

Hi Pete- this is vital information. If you had one chioce with one child-ipad or windows netbook, for use as education tool not as recreation gadget- waht would you decide? Also, have you had any of these ipads broken and had to pay for repairs and how would you cover these costs in your budgets? regards chris

If it was a choice of one of the other I would definately go for a windows netbook, on the grounds that it can run all the software you already have, is far cheaper, easier to network and if it is for a pupil with SEN you can tailor Windows much better for that purpose (larger icons. various colour schemes, maginfying glass, on-screen keyboard, audio control, and so on). Easier to network fully, can install printers... the advantages of s netboo are massive when looked at one-on-one

 

As for repairs, I've not had any broken yet, if any are damaged then I suspect that at least for the time being, it would not get replaced unless the cost was minimal - that would be up to he Head though, at the moment she has final say on what happens with the school's spending; her attitude is very much "respect what you have, or go without it" and that goes for staff as well as the kids!

Pete about the Apps the best thing to do is to gift them so that you have proof of paying for the (app developer also gets paid then). Speak to your local Apple Education Specialist and they should have briefed by Apple what to do.
