Wireless ADSL Router

Im setting up a small home network (xp pro) of 3 computers for a friend.

I want to set up the wireless adsl router, then have it stand alone downstairs while the 3computers are up-stairs using the wireless connection.

First of all is it possible to set up the router and then leave it to stand alone?

Second of all the broadband connection is BT, but is not a fixed IP address!! What does the routers IP config need to be?

That's as i've got mine set up - the router is a standalone device independant of the machines if that's what you mean. My netgear has the option to get IP dynamically from the ISP. All of 'em must have that i'd imagine...

I have a Linksys router for doing this (although I'm not sure if I like it) and it does indeed have the option for DHCP from your ISP. It will also use mDNS too (if you like that sort of thing).

 

From my reading of magazines and forums, I was lead to believe that BT use some dodgy proprietry hardware for some of their connections so you may need to check that out (or use a better ISP).

Yep, BT are awful (almost as bad as AOL) at letting users do what they will, within reason, with their connections. I have a Netgear ADSL wireless router and it works just fine with an internal DHCP range.

BT do supply their own external modem to use the broadband connection. I set up the connection normally (without the wireless ADSL router), and got the IP config but there is no mention of a DHCP. . . .
