FN-GM Posted March 20, 2012 Author Posted March 20, 2012 For those who have downloaded a copy you can get version 2.0.1 from the same place.
Gatt Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 I'd be interested in the MSI, though you can install it silently using the followng command: vlc--win32.exe /L=1033 /S Works perfectly with SCCM 2007, will also upgrade any existing version without any trouble.. 1
FN-GM Posted March 31, 2012 Author Posted March 31, 2012 Why PM? Share it here. Because its in a dropbox share, so i need e-mail address to approve people. But please feel free to post your e-mail address on here.

Indeed. This will also work as a part of a startup script if you don't have an application deployment suite such as CC3/4 or SCCM. With all due respect to FN-GM, an MSI for an installer which can be run silently anyway is unnecessary. The first rule of software repacking is "Don't unless there is absolutely no other option".

Personally i dont use it. But i know a good few people who dont like install software by a startup script so this would be the thing for them.

MSI GPO deployment can be better as it is all in one place and has an easy uninstall method. Not everyone has SCCM or the inclination to mess with a bunch of differrent deployment methods due to a few stroppy packages that refuse to accept that thier stuff actually runs on Windows and that the usage of their software would be increased by using an easily managed format. Much OSS stuff seems to be at war with it sofware actually being used in larger environments then whine about uptake, Firefox and MSI for instance. Besides repacking VLC is easy as it can run portable so just run a start cap, drop the portable program files and shortcuts in the right place and associate anything you require. Run your after cap and your done without much cruft at all. It is not 'always unnecessary', for instance you may want to alter some default settings at install time or get around some rubbish liscence system that can not be handled by the silent install.
Arthur Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 If you silently install VLC using their EXE installer, by default it will install browser plug-ins for IE & Firefox, dump a shortcut on your desktop and associate itself with almost all audio, video and playlist filetypes. Some people do not like that.

sted Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 even old versions did that my main issue with scripted vlc is upgrades its a pita as you have to version check to silent uninstall then redo removing an msi is easier

Arthur Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Wow, I had no idea the new version was that messy, what does it think it is, Skype? I don't know about you, but I hate installers which do not give you complete control over the installation (must be a form of OCD ). I don't want the hassle of tidying up after them or figuring out how to disable auto-updaters. Out of the six shortcuts the VLC installer creates on the Start Menu, five of them are irrelevant in a school environment and only serve to confuse (teachers) or entice (students) to mess about. even old versions did that Not quite... http://i.imgur.com/aiQNn.png http://i.imgur.com/RC677.png Can you spot the difference?

So you haven't heard of Redirected Start Menu's and Desktops then?
Arthur Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 (edited) We use redirected Start Menu's/desktops. I was thinking about the schools that don't when I wrote that. e.g. SimpleSi's. Edited March 31, 2012 by Arthur
