Staff Permissions to Student home folders

Hi all,

 

I've been asked to give teachers write permission to student home directories. At the moment they have read-only access via a mapped users share.

I don't want to give them standard modify rights, because this could allow them to drag student folders into one another, or be able to delete a student root folder, causing all sorts of issues. There are also several folders under each user e.g My Documents, Favourites etc that need to remain for the student to be able to logon.

 

What special permission options would be needed to allow them to only modify child files, and is a cacls batch file still the best way to set them all up?

bump - This is still a problem. I've tried setting special permissions 'files only' but this doesn't work. it does if I give standard modify to a teachers group but I don't want to do this for the reasons above.

I've had staff asking for write access to the students home folders and I just said no. You could set up some sort of complicated 'drop box' in the same way that the Apple computers have, but I just don't trust staff not to b@gger things up.

 

What we have is a shared drive called 'info' into which all staff are able to drop files, and students are able to read from, but not write to. If they need to send a file to a student privately, they can use a USB stick, or email.

We solved this problem by saying "No". There's too much potential for error and dilution of security if you allow this, imho.

I allow staff permissions to each of the students folders but not the level above. I then have a simple webpage which lists all the students with a link to each students user area. This way they can play with the students folders and do what they want but they can't move from one user to the next. Makes it quicker to search for students as well by using ctrl + f in the browser. I also gave more details such as year and form so that they know they are selecting the correct student.

You need to be careful of the rules for coursework here. Staff shouldnt really have write access to areas which have coursework. It has been discussed elsewhere on the forums too a number of times...
