Desktop lock down

I am looking for the best way to restore default settings for mouse and desktop icon position on our XP/Server 2003 network.

 

Then I want to lock the settings to the defaults.

 

I have noticed that many year 6 pupils are turning on mouse trails and custom pointers as well as arranging the desktop icons in ever more bizarre patterns.

 

Since I am a miserable old git at heart I want to stop this!

 

I thought I could do this through Group Policy objects but haven't been able find a way so far.

Well I redirect the desktop to a common folder which students don't have permission to save to. This stops them creating lots of icons.

 

However they can still move them but don't have enough icons to create anything artistic

 

They can still rename what they do have though, and that bugs the hell out of me. Well not sufficiently enough for me to get round to stopping it. As for mouse pointers how are they doing this. They must have some control panel access?

The default group policy does allow them to change mouse settings...I will lock this down once I have forced them back to default.

If the profiles are stored on the clients you can run Delprof to delete any local profiles that exist on the client machines. Change the access that people have got and disallow access to the control panel.

Yeah, also delete the profiles off the server otherwise when they log in it will just copy it back down to the local machine. If you delete them off the server, when the kid logs in it will copy the default profile back in and be nice and clean again.
