Disposal of Equipment

We've used PCB Plus for recycling our old PCs for a while now, however they have just let me know that they can no longer cover this area of the country. Does anyone know of any other companies who cover the south-east, Berkshire in particular?

 

We give our functioning equipment to Computer Aid International, but we still need a means of getting rid of the dead stuff.

Join Freecycle and get rid of at least some of them for free

we have just been told £250 per dump from the concile. I know some school give them to parents to take to the tip but i dont know where we stand with that. i have had 2 crts in my office for 5 months as i cant get rid of them.

All our hardware dead or alive (they know some stuff they might get will not work but they accept it as par of the course as to say) goes to our caretaker who takes it to his friend who builds computers for Africa.

 

But one thing we had not done in past but are going to do is person getting hardware must sign transfer of ownership form so we are not liable if not disposed of in proper/legal way.

That's just deferring the problem not addressing it, Russ. It absolves you of your legal requirement not to dump it in landfill, but it just passes it on to someone else.

 

Also, be careful with organisations taking equipment to Africa. I make no comment on your caretaker's friend as I don't know his situation, but I do know that a lot of unwanted and unusable equipment ends up in Africa - either unusable because of facilities or power problems, skills shortage/computer illiteracy of recipient or even remaining locked away to prevent theft! If you choose to send things to developing countries, you should make sure that they are getting used at the other end. I would recommend sending equipment via recognised large-scale organisations (Oxfam, Computer Aid International, etc) rather than Some Bloke Down the Pub.
