stop students using 'folder up' in xp

hi all.

 

one of our students has found a way to download files he shouldnt be able to, by saving them to the desktop, to over come this we have redirected the desktop to his h:\ which is fine, but i just want to stop him using the folder up if he finds another location.

Depends. If he is using a shortcut to a folder and then going up you can use a switch to make the shortcut act as the root folder so there is no up. If you mean from just choosing C: then we have hidden all but needed drives so they can't see anywhere but where they should be.

The way to prevent them access stuff is making sure your permissions are set right on the parent folder.

all the permisions are set correctly, it was just the fact that we didnt have the desktop redirected in group policy so it would go to a local profile which the permitions didnt apply to... the problem has been solved but i was wondering if their is eather a regestry or local group policy.

We have a set desktop for all pupils with a small amount of icons on that they are not allowed to alter. We use GPO to redirect their desktop to here and any folders above this are set to "explicit deny" for pupils.
