Hi - is it possible using folder permissions to have a situation where once students have saved a piece of work to the 'Hand in Homework' folder they can no longer edit the original document - they should be able to go back to the document and read it and, if they wish, resave it under another name but not edit the original once saved in this particular folder.

At the moment it's set up like this:

Share Permissions - Full Control for Students

NTFS Permissions ticked - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read, Write. I've also ticked Deny Delete Subfolders and files under Advanced

XP/2003 and the folder is mapped to each workstation using a simple net use etc script.

The above is working fine apart from the students can alter the original still.

Many thanks

No, I don't think you can as you would need to set some sort of conditions on what permission they should have which NTFS doesn't do.

Just an idea, though haven't tried it, create two shares for the same folder. One named "New Hand in Homework" and one "Check Hand in Homework" (Or what ever you want.

For "New Hand in Homework" give the users on "write" access and maybe "list Folder contents" but no "read/read & Execute" access. This should allow them to save to the folder but not read or modify anything.

Then for the "Check Hand in Homework", give them only read access but no other write/modify permissions.

Slightly more complicated but might work.
