Guest richard Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 Well I have downloaded and installed Ubuntu "Fiesty Fawn" with out any major issues apart from getting WPA/PSK encryption to work. I can find WEP just fine but we use WPA here. Any one know what I'm missing?

Geoff Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 WiFi support in Linux is a bit of a mess. Unless you go buy a card looking specifically for Linux support (Like CyberNerd did a while back).

saundersmatt Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 This is precisely the reason that i gave Ubuntu the boot from my laptop with integrated intel card. You might be interested to know that any version of Freebsd 6.* (and consequently PC/DesktopBSD) will support these cards out of the box. Although setting wireless security settings can still be problematic. Matt
Jackd Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 when i installed ubuntu feisty with my wireless card (2200BG) the default driver was ok. I think i just clicked on the network icon or maybe right clicked then it brought up a list of wireless networks and allowed me to connect with WPA. Just my 2 cents

Teth Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Last week our after school advanced IT group which I supervise installed feisty fawn on some notebooks as they're project for the day. We found the wifi support to be either brilliant or very ropey at random. There were 2 types of laptop involved HP nx9010s and Dell latitude 110ls. They both have builtin intel Wifi adapters. The 2 HPs both worked first time. The 110ls were more intresting. from 5 identical laptops 2 installed with WPA fully functional while 1 worked ona second install. Out of the remaining 2 one didn't find the wifi at all and the other could only use WEP even after a reinstall. It seems the hardware detection during the install is not 100%, it doesn't seem to get the same results every time.
