Moodle 1.9 and Windows share web client

This block seems to be mangling files as they download. It has been working foe months, but a student got 2 files with a conglomeration of the file names and a PPTX appearing as a docx. We also suspect it is connecting to wrong usernames as some odd things are happening. Has anyone any experience of this happening and/ or a suggested solution? The files on the server are fine, but the student effectively couldn't access them at home.
