This tip should also work for other webmail providers if you know the correct URL to use.

  1. Launch a new browser window and open up Gmail.
  2. Open the Javascript console by pressing Ctrl-Shift-J on Windows or Command+Option+J on Mac OS X and then paste in the following:

    navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","Gmail");

  3. Accept the confirmation at the top of the browser window and try out a mailto link. If you should ever need to remove this setting, you can do so via chrome://settings/handlers.
