I use DropBox at the moment and have been using iDisk, but obviously the latter is to disappear in a few months time so I've been looking for something that is all tied in nicely, and Google Drive sounds like it would be the winner for me ..

I took it to mean more space (docs only has one gig on normal google accounts) and possibly automatic folder sync like dropbox & sugarsync etc. 1

I have tonnes of non-document files which I use regularly ,exe's zip files etc I took it to mean more space (docs only has one gig on normal google accounts) and possibly automatic folder sync like dropbox & sugarsync etc. It might mean more space. Google docs currently has unlimited space for documents though, but you are limited to 1GB for non-google documents.

We'd ditch our staff and student home drives in a flash.

I have tonnes of non documents there Auto syncing via a mapped drive would be the icing on the cake! 1

Thing is, you should have a local backup at least of any files anyway if that's the case, so even if it does go wrong, you should still have them somewhere, and if you use DropBox to sync the same folder (or SkyDrive etc) then you have a failsafe (or so goes the theory! lol) Edited February 9, 2012 by soveryapt

It was more the thought that relying more and more on one service provider, the more chance I have of losing everything. Not because google is going anywhere (although they do have a habit of dropping services that are under used) but more because it may only take one silly statement on google+ for example, to have my account shut down, and lose all of the services I've come to rely on.

You use Google+ .. you must work for them .. surely it's only Google staff that have accounts on there .. lol .. EDIT: Ok, so I have a Google+ account, but I don't really USE it as such .. lol ..

The original idea was to create a standard style 'my computer' drive with offline capabilities. Hope they have stuck with this idea, as it would be perfect for me. If you have a android phone you can use this drive as the default save to folder, nice.

At the time [2008], Google was about to launch a project it had been developing for more than a year, a free cloud-based storage service called GDrive. But Sundar Pichai had concluded that it was an artifact of the style of computing that Google was about to usher out the door. He went to Bradley Horowitz, the executive in charge of the project, and said, "I don't think we need GDrive anymore." Horowitz asked why not. "Files are so 1990," said Pichai. "I don't think we need files anymore." Horowitz was stunned. "Not need files anymore?" "Think about it," said Pichai. "You just want to get information into the cloud. When people use our Google Docs, there are no more files. You just start editing in the cloud, and there's never a file." When Pichai first proposed this concept to Google's top executives at a GPS—no files!—the reaction was, he says, "skeptical." [Linus] Upson had another characterization: "It was a withering assault." But eventually they won people over by a logical argument—that it could be done, that it was the cloudlike thing to do, that it was the Google thing to do. I got a draft release from a partner of Google’s upcoming Google Drive service and it gives away a wealth of information about how Google plans to take on the incumbent Dropbox. The short story? 5 GB of storage, and it launches next week, likely on Tuesday at http://drive.google.com
