MkII Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 My IT Co-ord. - an english grad but 'peculiar' in his pronounciations sometimes... [he says 'dyude' not 'dude' maan! ]. He pronounces both 'G's' as in get and not gem. Sounds stoopid to me as i've always thought it to be pedagodgy [as in dodgy ]
GrumbleDook Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 If you consider the word "Pedagogue", a late Middle English word derived, via Latin, from the Greek "paidagogos" (denoting a slave who accompanied a child to school [pais. paid- 'boy' + agogos 'guide'] ) you would consider it to have the letter g hardened both times it appears. However, the word "pedagogy" is derived from the later usage of the word Pedagogue, when it actually meant a teacher or instructor who was a slave. This comes from when the translation 'boy-guide' stopped meaning a slave who went to school with a child, but to one who schooled a child. The usage of the word changed in both Greece and Rome to mean the latter ... This meant that the French took the word 'paidagogia' (the second g is softened to sound like the letter j) which means "office of the pedagogue". Our use of the word pedagogue as a teacher comes directly from the latin usage in church, whereas the use of pedagogy (with the second g being softened as it was originally pedagogie ...) is derived from the French (Taken from my Latin notes from 17 years ago ... and double checked again online etymology pages. I was happily surprised to find out my teachers did actually know what they were talking about ... who would have thought it!!!)

When I used an M$ box as my daily machine I used to have a nice plug-in for Office called BullFighter (available from http://www.fightthebull.com) that I found really handy to use. And some of the worst stuff was from the unions ... oh ... or Tony B's speeches.
