Obtaining x64 printer drivers

I'm adding 64 bit print drivers to our server 2003 print server. HP instead of putting drivers on their website are instructing you to connect your PC to the device and let windows update download it's driver.

 

What's the best way of getting your hands on the drivers

We are running Windows 7 64 bit. We have found that we have to employ a mix of the printers' own 64 bit driver and the 64 bit Universal Driver [depending on the model of printer]

 

Either way I get the drivers from HP.COM:

I search for the model there. If there is no dedicated driver for your printer it will probably recommend that you use the Universal Driver.

What about the drivers on the CD that come with the printer [i haven't used them in ages but would it be worth a try?]

Windows update Catalogue is where I got mine from last week, it is a bit of a PITA though, It does seem that HP have bundled all the drivers together into one Microsoft driver pack, but it can be downloaded for lots of printers. You will need matching 64 bit and 32 bit drivers, so remember to download them both.

That's the annoying bit, it would be nice not to have to mess about with the existing drivers. I just know something will break. I'm wondering if it might be better off having a second print server for my Windows 7 clients.

That's what i've done for a couple of schools with difficult copiers, the xp Pc's go to the original print server, setup a 08 vm for the 64bit clients, all works fine

easiest way ive found is to plug the printer in locally on a x64 pc and let it install the drivers then manually on that pc add the network version of the printer. When its finished faaffing round on the x64 pc go to printer properties of the network version sharing and tick the x64 box it should upload the drivers to the server

 

its also worth trying just adding 2003 x64 drivers to the server that usually works as well i find
