How to add a computer to dns?

I want to add our old server to our new servers dns so that we can refference it with its name rather than having to use its ip address. Dns is all set up on the new server but just wondering if there is an idiots guide as how to do it? The old server does nothing much these days (server 2003) apart from wsus and file storage.

DHCP or Static?

 

If dhcp you can do ipconfig /registerdns if static if you go onto the new server and open the dns (administrative tools) forward lookup zones / domain.local right click create new a record.

Thanks will look at that in morn. Is the change instant or is there a refresh time etc for it to take effect?

should be instant you should then be able to do from the command line nslookup servername and it will return the ip address.

Right having a look at it now and gone to dns and right clicked the domain.local but its giving me all sorts of options for new that I could ever wish for! Which one should I select?Host, Alias, Other New Records? or a choice from any other? Thanks

New Host (A or AAAA) will give you a record Alias is for when you are giving a machine a second alias which tends to be used for webservices most.

Next question...do i tick the box to create a pointer PTR record and allow any authenticated user to update? Srry for the dumb questions but never messed with DNS before and it needs doing now rather than when I have the time to look at it a bit more as usual. Relies really appreciated.

Yes create a PTR record (will help if you need to resolve IP to a Hostname rather then Hostname - IP) and it shouldn't matter about the auth user.

Right done that and here are the scores on the doors, said it created the record sucessfully, opened a cmd window and can ping the old server by name and ip, can browse a share folder on the old server but \\ip address\folder but nbot by \\name\folder Any ideas, tried on a client and the same. Should I need to reboot or anything or is there anything else I need to do?

 

Think I just spotted the error, its saying its clock is out of sync with the main server (notr slowing up to read error messages properly!) Going to just reset the time manually but how do I get it to sync up?

Clocks need to be within 5 mins of the Primary Domain Controller for Kerberos

Glad to see the above worked. Also for future reference, the updates on both the DNS server and client machines may not always be instant

 

If you create the record on a server and it does not instantly ping - From within DNS clear the Cache (This can be done by right clicking the DNS server name then "Clear Cache"

Then from the command prompt type ipconfig /flushdns

From a client, you should only need to do ipconfig /flushdns

 

As a last note, if you have a large number of DNS servers and Clients a change within DNS can take some time to traverse your network
