Photo Backup

Hopefully this is in the right place...?

 

I have a large collection of pictures on my laptop from various large events I want a way of backing them up so that if my laptop ever dies i can easily access them again. Currently i have done this by copying them manually across from my laptop onto a network share of an ubuntu box. Is there software that will backup these photos but only backup the latest photos that i have taken? (Incremental backup?) preferably automatically once my laptop joins the home network.

You could create a batch file that runs in the background. In the file then use robocopy with the /mir switch to make the backups Incremental

Install backuppc on the linux box. Dead simple setup.

 

Apt-get install backup-pc I think or maybe remove the -

robocopy but I would suggest NOT using the /mir switch /mir Mirrors the folders, which would delete files out of the backup folder if they were deleted from the laptop. Not quite what you want.

 

robocopy by default only copies new files so should do what you are looking for.

SyncToy 2.1 is a free application that synchronizes files and folders between locations. Typical uses include sharing files, such as photos, with other computers and creating backup copies of files and folders.

 

SyncToy can perform five actions on folder pairs.

 

Synchronize: New and updated files are copied both ways. Renames and deletes on either side are repeated on the other.

Echo: New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames and deletes on the left are repeated on the right.

Contribute: New and updated files are copied left to right. Renames on the left are repeated on the right. No deletions.

 

Works well for me keeping all my photos backed-up to my NAS.
