Hello,

I have taken a photos of our server racks, and want to put something together so that when I hover the mouse over a certain part of the photo, a description pops up. So for example one of our 60 servers in one of the racks, hover mouse over the individual server in the photo and a description appears.

Any ideas?

Oliver.

There is a lot of software out there that could put it as a flash file/flip book etc.

I am currently playing with PDF to flip book style :)

This sort of software can also do pictures.

Or simply put it as the background to an excel worksheet and use comments on the relevant cells. You can even add images as comments now, or hyperlinks to other documents / worksheets ... a very visual tool.

Or make a Facebook profile for each server and tag them all in a group server party gallery :p

(and no that wasn't meant to be a serious suggestion in case anyone has any doubt!)

Tbh if they're standard HP or Dell severs I'd just build a Visio diagram of everything as all the labelling and information fields are built in... get all your shapes from here...

If feeling really OCD you could even try and draw in the connections from the NICs (although it tends to get very messy very quickly!)

I wonder how well that works with a stack of servers which are identical...

You get the little coloured circle stickers from the year wall calendar and put them on the servers in different configurations. It will pick it up. You could do the same with QR codes / Microsoft Tags.

Thats quite true but then you have to cover those nice shiney toys with lots of stickers...

the other thing is a sticker on each server with its name/roll?

But where is the Geekery in that? Put the Common Sense down and step away from the conversation!
