windows 7 slow login when not connected to domain

I having a wee problem I can’t get my head around!!

Iv just got round to rolling out Staff Laptops with windows 7 on them.

 

When login on with a domain user with network i have no issues.

Without network the login takes around 20 seconds or so.

 

Login script and Home drives are set in AD, When I take out all info to do with connecting a Home Drive the logon seems to work fine. Has anyone else had this problem or know of a fix?

THis will be the timeout on scripts that is being a pain here. You can reduce the default (which is 5 mins) - assuming that you know onsite via your wireless, a logon will complete in that time. The setting is under Computer Config > Admin Templates > System > Scripts > Max wait time

I think Id already tryed the max wait time. Just had another try. Its strange when I take away a users home folder from AD the login is instant.

Iv got a test gp with these two settings set;Computer Config > Policies > Windows Settings > Interactive Logonshow > Interactive logon: Number of previous logons to cache (in case domain controller is not available) >10 logons & the one you suggested set to 5 seconds.

 

I’m I missing anything?

In the DNS are they pointing to your DC?

The Laptop DNS is only picking up only one DNS server & the DNS servers are our DC. Is that what your asking?

As long as its pointing at your DC it will be ok.

I have seem to have the same problem with Windows 7 Professional on a HP Laptop. I have been also checking if the latest service or hot fix will fix this problem as i don't have the latest updates ATM. This problem occurs when you set a home drive using a windows 2003 server domain controller. Now because this a laptop that logs in with a domain account you can't always expect to be connected all the time to the network. As in the first post int the topic. No lag when connected to the network but soon as you are not connected a 20-30 sec login wait time. Why does Microsoft keep screwing up things when they a had it good because I did a test on Windows XP SP3 and it works fine. This only effects Windows 7. This happens when you have home drives on disconnect domain computers on Windows 7. Get rid of home drives and problem is fixed.

I have made a quick fix with a batch script like:

net use h: \\dc1\files\%username% /persistent:yes

I am sure their is got to be a fix for this problem.

Hi Patrick, I’m still having the same problem. I’ve not successfully been able to start rolling out win 7 on Staff Laptops yet. So I hope someone might be able to shed some light. I’ll be interested in anyone’s view.

I do apologise FN-GM, I had to take a break from this issue, and I must have forgot to get back to you. The answer was yes. The machines DNS Point to The DC’s.

I am thinking it's gota be a windows bug that no one has reported it.
