Has anyone used a Windows Tablet PC for SIMS. One of our admin staff wants to be able to walk around the school showing teachers how to do things in SIMS. So, has anyone got any suggestions for a Windows Tablet PC to run SIMS on our wireless network.

Silly question, and slightly offtopic, but if they're "walking around the school" aren't they walking to where the teachers are? aka can use their computers?

 

Can't see why they'd need to be showing things while "truly mobile"?

I recently saw a demonstration of SIMS Emerge, an app available for iPad/iPhone (possibly Android). It's a paid extension to SIMS but looks useful to PE staff, staff on trips with pupils and, at next update, parents.

we had a member of SLT who carried around a Fujitsu machine a newer version would be Tablet PCs STYLISTIC Q550 Fujitsu.

I think they run normal versions of windows still so a standard install would do.

 

I would have to agree that if your showing someone how to use a system, showing them on their own machine would probably be a better idea.

I agree that you should use the Teacher's own access.

The person walking round with mobile access will no doubt have different Permissions to the Classroom Teacher.

You need to advise that Teacher based on what they can see with their own Login!

We use a iPad2 with Emerge installed whiich has been very useful. As for an admin staff using for demo version i think you need a full blown install of Sims.

The OP asked about showing staff what to do in SIMS. So the iPad idea, with it's limited functionality, would not suffice for this task!

Well we have used a RDP connection today from the iPad 2 to a win 7 box with sims installed. Did the demo we needed to show and worked for what we need. I am guessing they could use an iPad in the same way if set up correctly. But this is depending on the wireless coverage of the school.

I can see why you might want to run it yourself, on a portable device. Then you could sit in a staff room, or other environment, not need to take over a lesson / screen.

Emerge is great, but limited.

If wireless is good, and it's a PC device, just stick SIMS on as a client, though RDP would be quicker.

I wouldn't think of using a tablet though, you really want a netbook, with a mouse, to do anything useful.

Pick up a cheap ASUS Transformer (though not that cheap), it's cool, plus get a keyboard dock, might do the trick. I'd like to try out a new chromebook and see what that can do.

You can get an Acer for £200 but i'd recommend thinking about what else they might want to do and get something a bit more powerful. HP make business end netbooks, but they can be dear e.g. 5102. I think that one had touch screen too.

With that in mind, look for some of those combo devices, like HP, Dell, or i think it's flickbook Storm or something, that have revolving screens so it can be tablet or netbook.

Try to get a 2GB model if poss', and ideally n grade wireless to try and future proof it.

I have a HP 5101 and having gigabit ethernet is really handy when i do plug it in back at the desk, i don't know how common that is now though.

Just saw this , it's a B-grade refurb, but cheap for testing if you want a tablet, need to go down the remote access route though as it's android.

These will probably be the only tablets i see at Christmas.

 

Just about the only one the wife will let me spend money on to.
