A few initial tips you may or may not need to do things in VMWare:

 

1) It works.. or at least for me.. so far. VM #1 being a forest root.

 

2) I changed the VMWare NIC to an Intel (so I didn't have to track down a driver) by editing the *.vmx file and adding: ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000"

 

3) Server Core: My VM #2 joined to the domain. There's apparently a "step by step" guide for an earlier beta somewhere. You you might need MSDN or something because I can't find it, but there is a technet forum with some useful nuggets but not the next one..

 

4) Server Core: First thing you normally do is use netsh to assign an IP address. Skip the next sensible step (trying to ping that address) because unlike standard server, Server Core firewall has inbound Echo-Request - ICMPv4-In disabled.

 

[Very unimpressed by that being classified as a "File and Printer Sharing" rule instead of "Core Networking" used for ICMP Dest. Unreachable, ICMP Frag. Needed....]

 

5) Sever Core: Unless you like hitting CTRL-ALT every time you need your cursor out of the VM window, you can install VMWare Tools by mounting the ISO to the CD drive and then manually running the MSI.
