DPM Internal SMTP Server?

Hi folks,

 

As background: this is a school network running 2008 Server R2, but not using Exchange.

 

We're using Data Protection Manager for backup, and I would like to configure the monitoring side to send emails.

 

The only SMTP I have access to is external and provided by the County Council here, but also behind a firewall that we cannot control. This SMTP works fine with Outlook though, and does not require authenication (I assume it's limited to school connections and filtered by address on that basis).

 

If I use this SMTP account data in DPM it does not work. As the SMTP server appears to work without authentication (as above) I do not enter any, and get the following error if I try to send an email: ID: 2013. Details: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. If I fill out the authentication part with my email address and password then it prompts for an email address to test with, but still falls over with the same error.

 

Any ideas?

 

Is there anything simple I can install as an internal SMTP server?

1. You can setup a normal Windows box and setp IIS and use that SMTP server. I assume you only want emails to be sent internally.

2. Even with Outlook you're authenticating, probably NTLM or Kerboros.

3. If you want to use the CC SMTP server, then they will have to allow relay (internally) or setup credentials for you to use.

4. As a test, when you enter your credentials, what are you using as the test email?

5. I suspect, when DPM makes the connection and SMTP server can see the connection coming in as anonymous, hence the rejection.

I have exactly the same problem with DPM, it's quite common if you do a search on the net. I tried a few of th suggested fixes to do with the database but they did not work. You have identified the issue which is DPM Will not allow you to send without using authentication. I never got back to it but I was going do as Sukh suggested and use the basic SMTP function you can enable on an IIS install.

It's either that or will have to get the CC to allow your DPM server to relay.

We use the same config on other devices such as photocopiers etc so it's definitely DPM that has this issue and not the mail server.

A simple test would be to telnet and try and relay from the DPM server. If that works then you know it's a DPM issue and not mail.

That's a good point. I did in my initial tests connect to the mail server using telnet and did a helo but I didn't go as far as trying an email thorough telnet.

OK, I have added the SMTP feature, enabled the IP address, set authentication to integrated, added the SCDPM to allowed connections, add added a domain admin account as a permitted user. On the SCDPM I have then used the above details to send, along with an email address. (I'm assuming these are all the correct settings...)

 

But I still get an error: An authentication error occured when trying to connect to the SMTP server. (ID: 518). You typed an incorrect username, password, or SMTP server name. Type the correct name of password to enable email delivery ior reports and alert notifications.

 

Any ideas?

Added the SMTP feature? Did you install IIS on a server?

I found a member server already had IIS installed.

1. After adding the DPM server's IP, did you perform a Telnet relay test?

2. What was the outcome?

Not tried Telnet. My experience with it is very limited. What commands would I need to send to test? Would I telnet to the IP address:port?

Thanks Sukh! I got it working.

 

The basic issues seemed to be (a) enabling all forms of authentication on the SMTP server (b) double checking that the DPM server is allowed to connect and relay.

 

On the DPM server I specified the administrator account for authentication.
