sonofsanta Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 I think a really clever (and too much effort for me to teach myself) method for disguising a password would be putting a couple of redundant characters followed by a backspace into your typing pattern, just to really throw off anyone trying to watch. Much too much chance of me just messing it up though and ending up retyping the password a second time and giving them a second pass at figuring it out...

That could help against shoulder surfing, but keyloggers won't be fooled. Idealy, everything needs something like a softkey keyboard. It was shoulder surfing I was thinking of - we've had girls here get the Smoothwall Guardian Bypass password from watching a teacher type it in. It was the Head of ICT as well, who is actually a more-than-competent IT user, so she did bloody well to pick it up off him! Just always makes me nervous when I'm typing the admin password in to log in.

Well as was mentioned in the S2 thread elsewhere - Orange will give you a fat discount if you prove you work in a school (and if they tell you they don't, they're lying, as I've heard it multiple times from multiple sources, not just on here)

Reputedly as much as 25%, I think I heard 15%, but either way it's a decent discount and worth arguing for. Contract only though afaik, but could be worth a go with the pay-as-you-go option.

I'm still PAYG, but I top up minimum £10 a month to get my free texts, if not £15 for free t'internet as well. On top of the purchase price of my phone (which was admittedly a pretty cheap £99) the differential over two years wasn't massive, so might be worth doing the sums. I suspect next time I get a phone I might go contract and get a higher end smartphone, now I've tested the waters with a smaller/older device.

Once you get a smartphone, though, you start using it all the time, and living without data starts feeling like living without a hand. This is why I waited so long to smartphone up myself - I knew that it was a one way street and once you get used to it, you can never be without it again. If you're not sure just yet, though, you may as well wait - ain't nothing develops so fast as the smartphone market at the moment.

I don't use my phone for talking on Twitter, Facebook, E-mail, SMS, BBM......but I wouldn't talk on it....that's too unhygienic. Really, it's because I don't have any friends, either.
