Setting up a secure VPN

Hi all,

 

I'm looking to set up a secure VPN so that staff can access thier school documents folder from home. I have experience of setting up VPN's as I did one at a previous school I worked at, though (against my advise) they had the DC as the VPN server. I'm looking to set up a box in between our DC and router to allow staff to connect and then access their documents. Is it best to have a XP/2003/2008 installed on the box and lock it down or is there a linux alternative?

Have a look at Forefront TMG 2010 - it can only ever be run on a dedicated server (or virtual machine as we run it) and it does all the popular VPN protocols and best of all it uses the built in Windows VPN client.

 

We have a SSTP VPN setup here using TMG - the simplest to setup (you only need a valid security certificate for your VPNs address) however it only works with Windows Vista/7.

set-up a PFsense server and use the OpenVPN package, works with any client and any OS quick and easy to set-up and you can set-up your certificates in cert manager.
