Ruckus AP setup options : with Samsung Intel Centrino N 6230 cards...

Rucks 7363 AP.

 

Looking for some setup guidance....

 

The Intel Centrino N 6230 driver is the latest one from INTEL.

It can run at N speeds.

 

I've set the AP up with a static IP and looks like I have a choice when it comes to setting up the WLAN.

Either 2.4GHz or 5GHz?

 

I've set up a 5GHz WPA secure WLAN (PSK) & a 2.4GHz WPA secure WLAN (PSK)

 

I've connected 3 client laptops to each and logged on with the same user:

 

When they use the 2.4GHz they simultaneously logon in 1min 40 seconds.

When they use the 5GHz they logon in 54 seconds.

 

Should I just disable the 2.4GHz WLAN if I am only using the AP with these specific laptops?

 

Also I can check on the AP the specifics of each laptops connection:

They are:

 

Laptop1

Good Packets: 779 (4.0/sec)

Number of Retries: 40 (0.0/sec)

Physical Layer Data Rate: 39.0 Mbps

Throughput Estimate: 6.3 Mbps

Packet Error Rate: 3 %

Estimated SNR: 44 dB

 

Receive Details

Good Packets: 276 (0.0/sec)

Discards by CRC Error: 8 (0.0/sec)

 

 

 

Laptop2

Good Packets: 943 (8.0/sec)

Number of Retries: 53 (1.0/sec)

Physical Layer Data Rate: 39.0 Mbps

Throughput Estimate: 5.6 Mbps

Packet Error Rate: 0 %

Estimated SNR: 50 dB

 

Receive Details

Good Packets: 225 (3.0/sec)

Discards by CRC Error: 1 (0.0/sec)

 

 

 

Laptop3

Good Packets: 956 (7.0/sec)

Number of Retries: 37 (0.0/sec)

Physical Layer Data Rate: 24.0 Mbps

Throughput Estimate: 6.3 Mbps

Packet Error Rate: 1 %

Estimated SNR: 43 dB

 

Receive Details

Good Packets: 208 (2.0/sec)

Discards by CRC Error: 0 (0.0/sec)

 

 

Should the errors be a cause for concern?

 

The specific settings for the WLAN are:

Channel = smartselect

channel width = 40MHz

protection mode = RST-CTS

Hi, The Data rates that can be reached on 5GHz are higher that that on 2.4GHz.

2.4GHz is much more congested so using 5GHz where possible is always recommend.

 

Are those readings from the clients from the 2.4GHz radio?

Packet loss is to be expected in 802.11 due to the nature of CSMA/CA, its trying to achieve the lowest error rate possible that makes for good Wi-Fi, enter Ruckus.

 

I would not use 40MHz on 2.4GHz, you are limited to 3 non overlapping channels in the 2.4GHz spectrum, 1, 6 and 11.

When using two channels there will be overlap on neighbouring channels making only one channel available in that spectrum that does not overlap, and that channel may be subject to non-802.11 interference.

 

Do not use RTS-CTS protection mode unless you have 802.11b only devices that you need to co-operate with the same BSS, (AP'(s)), however in this case it will be enabled automatically. It just creates too much unnecessary contention overhead to content for the air.

 

It is however very useful for solving the hidden-node issue, but with Ruckus, it is very UNLIKELY you will face this issue.
