Since the introduction of Media Studies this school year our pupils home directories size have shot up. I expected this but some of them have over 4gb in theirs ( we don't use quotas as we have very large storage) I notice that this file size seems to be very large, sometime 1.5gb for a 20 min clip. Now the Media dept have never come to us for help or advice with this and i know they use Adobe Premiere Elements for nearly all the work and all videos are avi format.

Now it don't take a genius to work out they must be using unnecessary high frame videos. I need to find out and see if i can stop this happening or my very large server will soon be full.

What do you do/use in this situation.

Also most of our video editing is being streamed across the network as their is no local access to the c:drive?

1. Run WinDirStat to see if anyones taking the pee. If so shout at them.

2. Install extra storage capacity.

Assign generous quotas so people will have to think about what they are doing. You might have large amounts of storage but how long does it take to back all that up?
