WSUS Installation

I'm new to WSUS i have installed the WSUS software on my Server Windows Server 2003. I have synchronised and got all the updates.

 

I have gone to a workstation and in the address bar typed

 

\\servername\selfupdate - and it comes back saying

 

The website declined to show this webpage

HTTP 403

Most likely causes:

This website requires you to log in.

 

What you can try:

Go back to the previous page.

Do i need to install any client software it is a XP SP2 client.

http://servername/wsusadmin

 

Try that instead

That works fine but how do i add computers to the WSUS there are no computers showing. Im confused

Have you setup the group policy settings?

You must define the windows update policy in a GPO.

 

Computer Config -> Admin Templates -> Windows Update

Yes, i have done that but still no computers showing under \\servername\wsusadmin cant i try it manually?

Running the following on a machine will register it with WSUS:

wuauclt /detectnow /resetauthorization

 

Also, you can check C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log for errors.

I have a script that does this for all the computers in a domain/OU. It does this what Geoff mentionens above but then leaves a marker so that it does not run again.

Faza - how are you getting on?

 

IMHO the whole thing sounds like a group policy issue - apologies if this seems a like a "sucking eggs" scenario but have you

 

(a) checked that your pcs are in the correct OU that the policy is being applied to (top level?) It may be worth (i) creating a separate policy for WSUS and then (ii) applying it to a separate OU eg / ict suite first

 

(b) does your policy point at the WSUS server? Is the IP address / server name correct?

Yes pointing to the correct ou and the group policy is pointing to ther correct srverf / IP Address.

Oh and for the sake of pete, jerry and the grandkids.. make sure your PC's all have different ID's if you used ghost to clone them.

 

Always fun trying to get it to work when the WSUS server thinks there's just one PC..
