We are having huge problems with double authentication in SharePoint 2010, when students and staff logon at home they are asked to retype their username and password in each time they want to open a file, any ideas? we are currently trying to see if our provider can help us but its not working out, is there anything that anyone knows of that i can change on my SharePoint server that might reduce the problems?

Many Thanks

That's because at home they aren't logged into your Active Directory. Hence although they have signed in through their web browser, when they open a document in Word, for example, Word doesn't know that and attempts to access the document as the logged in user, who is denied as not in your AD, and prompts for authentication again.

If they leave Word open when accessing a second document then it won't prompt them again, but if they close it before opening another document they will be prompted again.

If you have an Enterprise license you can work around this by using Office Web Apps.

Alternatively if you are using ISA or TMG, then if they select "This is a private computer" then all applications will share the same authentication cookie.
