Hello again

How hard or complicated is it to migrate CMIS over to a new server..then migrate the database and then set up the users

I have been waiting for weeks for our support to turn up to no avail.

Ha, the cheek.

I think I'm going to let @john answer this one, I do i've been doing it 7 years so I might not be the best person to ask!

(I mean I've had experience of doing it for 7 years, not I've been doing the same migration for 7 years  )

You could do a fresh install on the new server, backup the old via facility, and restore on the new. (You also need to copy the doc storage folder if you use it). Test, and then get your support team to test it. Job done. Any issues arrise during testing you havent touched the old server.

I think there may be quicker ways but that should work.

Hi all,

There are quicker ways but that's recommended.

Please also be aware that it's not as simple as copying doc store folder - the location of the documents is stored in the database table (changing the settings for the location does not update the table retrospectively) so an update statement will need to be run on the relevant table in the database.

No worries Rob thanks for your continued input in the wider community :)

You know where I am if you've moved it in the past and have a few docs that don't work.

Thanks for the replies.

I downloaded PDFs and zip files from serco..going to install onto new server as suggested...see wot appens....

a. I have installed facility successfully.

b. I have installed eportal....but not sure exactly what I am doing next.. Do I install "scheduler" or do I install the

backed up data

Can someone give me an idiots guide to to what actually facility, eportal ,sql are linked... a basic description of the whole setup. I checked serco but could find nothing really

Very simplistically it goes like this :-

Facility is the main front end, which stores its data in sql server.

Scheduler only needs to be installed for your timetabler, you can leave it for now if it helps.

eportal is the web interface to the data Facility has stored in SQl server.

So installation wise, you need to install Windows and SQL server.

Then install Facility and get it working

Then tackle installing eportal (this is the fun bit, you may find copying the conf folder from the old server across will give you a head start.)

Hi,

There are some very specific settings you need to configure in SQL both in the installation and the creation of the database. I can't stress enough how much you shouldn't be doing this without relevant traing and or documentation, you really don't want to compromise the integrity of your data.

You also need to make sure before moving the data that the timetabler doesn't have an extraction of the timetable out of the database for scheduler. If they do they need to integrate it, then take a new extraction from the new versions. Scheduler isn't updated on the server as Robk says but on the timetablers machine. Scheduler, ePortal and Admin versions must be compatible versions at all times. With every version of Admin comes a version of Scheduler - this isn't always the case with ePortal, so always check the site if you're unsure.

I got your PM with your details and will give you a call in the morning when I can between meetings to see if I can help at all with yourself and the LA. I really strongly advise against going any further without some official guidance.

I should also say at risk of upsetting Edugeek that we do offer a consultancy service- it sounds to me like you don't need it if it's part of the provision your LA provide, but you're no doubt going to breach your support SLA with the LA and with Serco if you go ahead without guidance and training and have issues in the future.

Sorry this sounds so strict - I'm just very concerned about your data, it's not something you can leave to chance. Sometimes problems don't rear their heads for months afterwards and are then incredibly difficult to rectify.

Kindest Regards

Michael Sanderson

P.S - What Robk said is spot on, I just think he made it sound too easy! It's too easy to get it wrong too.

Thats a very fair point Michael, my experiance is from test setups, which of course don`t have to be spot on. I would concur that you can never have too much support on a change like this.

I seem to remember seeing an install guide somewhere on firstline, which would be a good starting point for testing.
