Iain.Faulkner Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Morning All, We're currently having a bit of an issue with regards logon times. Just for the background, we're running Server 2008 on our DC's and most of our other servers, with 2003 on the rest. Clients are all Windows 7 Enterprise (since being upgraded over the summer). Since staff came back in September their logon times have been getting progressively worse, the worst reported logon time currently stands at 72 minutes!!! They get to the login screen pretty quickly, enter their details and the PC sits there at the "Welcome" screen. This issue is only affecting staff, who use roaming profiles which have a limited size of 100mb in place. Students use mandatory profiles and aren't being affected. At this point, all we've done is restarted our servers and core switches. Any suggestions on where to go next would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Iain
Guest Guest Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Turn on verbose login, that should give some help with where the login is getting stuck
Sheridan Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 I had a similar delay on logins a while back. I made a staff account and administrator temporarily to watch what was happening. It turned out that during the login a command prompt box was appearing asking for credentials to the DFS share that users are mapped to. All I can suggest is something similar, setup a 'debug' login and watch what is happening (task manager etc) 1
Iain.Faulkner Posted September 30, 2011 Author Posted September 30, 2011 HP universal print driver in use? Ben The issue is too widespread for that, I think, we don't have many HP printers and it's happening in areas where the driver wouldn't be. Turn on verbose login, that should give some help with where the login is getting stuck I've already got this turned on, and the screen it gets stuck on just says "Welcome"..... SHimmer45 Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 DNS issue? are the profiles for the users very large. is there a difference if they have logged onto the pc before? (depending on how the profile is stored on the pc) i did come accross and odity with Mcafee Version 8.7 with vista which needed you to turn off the NLA (network location awareness) Service or it would sit on the login screen even on a stand alone laptop.
DaveyPitch Posted September 30, 2011 Posted September 30, 2011 Anything in Event Viewer that shows up as errors of warnings? Might be a clue in there.
Iain.Faulkner Posted October 11, 2011 Author Posted October 11, 2011 I've been given the following link to a Hotfix from Microsoft for this.... Roaming profile users experience slow logons on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 client computers Currently I've applied the registry changes to 3/4 machines (but not the hotfix as yet) and the logon times have come down to under two minutes....although I'm not saying the issue is completely resolved, it is progress :-)

Lurkovic Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 How large are the Profiles? Is there any redirection in place to save data in the home directory, instead of the profile?
