zag Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 So we are running a tablet trial in school at the moment with Ipad2's mainly but a few androids to mix it up. The staff are loving it so far and I'm really impressed with new stuff they have managed to do. But how are people taking registers on tablets? I've tried the SLG register function on sharepoint but its useless with finger touch Any other ideas? If I could get this going then laptops for teachers will hopefully be a thing of the past
chrisgoodrich Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 We have brought Bromcom Teachers WebFolders SIMS Direct for our PE staff to use on iPod Touches. It is an excellent product. In the next release they are resolving issues with the iPad which I am led to believe will be out at the end of the month, We also brought the web version as well so teachers can do all they need to on SIMS without having to login to SIMS.

zag Posted September 21, 2011 Author Posted September 21, 2011 Using SLG on an Ipad is a pain. I cant even see the bottom of the registers in landscape mode! Also the triangles to page left and right are far too small for a finger touch. Finally entering a "/" is a pain in the backside so far.

And I know of schools with SLG who are buying into I-Pads and Emerge, supposedly just to use them for SIMS! Absolutely crazy!! I wish that we had money to burn like that!

SIMS Emerge might be an option I would suggest that trying the RM Slate with W8 may help matters. The improvements in the onscreen keyboard and touch functionality really have made me take notice of it's abilities. If there is a web interface to SIMS it may also be much more useful. Unless it uses Flash or Jave that is!

The touch interface in 7 was designed to be pixel perfect i.e. to be used with a mouse for 'on screen' controls, which is not the way 'real' touch interfaces work. W8 has fixed this and is much more accurate when using touch. As regards the screen. The RM Slate has a higher resolution @ 1366x768 and I have had no problems whatsover with input onto it.

We've installed logmein to give staff access to a normal desktop, giving them full access to all of the tools they need (email/sims/office/network folders). it also avoids any syncing/copying of data problems. So far so good and much cheaper than purchasing extra software addon's

I could work around it but I would be doing it contrary to the instructions I was given! Also, you have to leave a Workstation on to connect to if you want full access to SIMS. Not what we want to do in the evenings/night when we have to run backups etc etc.

Staff on duty can log BMR's and do attendance etc while around the school as well as check emails. Should having machines logged on prevent an SQl backup? I know updates will be prevented when having users logged on.

Come back to the real world, W8 is majorly beta, we've got a good few years before it's mainstream and Capita supports it. The RM slate even in a special touch application is ok at best. Compare it to the iPad 1 and it's pants. If it was going to give PE staff a mobile option for SIMS, it would most likely be an ipad\itouch solution with emerge.
