mac_shinobi Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Anyone got a walk through on how to get the clients to point to a wsus server? Need a guide on how to set wsus up as well. Thanks
plexer Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 How about you get wsus setup first then? Then you can worry about pointing the clients to it. Ben
Geoff Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Aren't the MS whitepapers sufficient? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E99C9D13-63E0-41CE-A646-EB36F1D3E987&displaylang=en#38;displaylang=en If you are having a specific problem during a WSUS deployment just post a question. I'm sure we can help.
ChrisH Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 It's not hard to setup. you can blag most of it by skimming through the interface. You then just have to set the GPO to get it to point at that server and set the client options.
Geoff Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Make sure you override the reboot options for your servers though
mac_shinobi Posted April 17, 2007 Author Posted April 17, 2007 Apparently it was done by the previous person who used to work here aprox 2 years ago and need to read those white papers that you posted above. Will post back later on if I get stuck on anything thanks
kingswood Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 It's not hard to setup. you can blag most of it by skimming through the interface. You then just have to set the GPO to get it to point at that server and set the client options. That's pretty much it really. Although you do have to watch that you meet the pre-requisites. And if you are upgrading a SUS server to WSUS there are some things you need to watch for. Oh and then setting the GPO properly..and also making sure that clients check in when they should..meh..it'll be fine Paul
kylewilliamson Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 The GPO guide is included in the help on the wsus admin webpage kyle
mac_shinobi Posted April 18, 2007 Author Posted April 18, 2007 In the editing of the group policy for specify intranet microsoft update server location, I have pointed it to the wsus server which is nimlok-srv and it picks up the machines fine and using the wsus GUI I have made 2 groups one for xp clients and one for 2000 clients and have shifted the relevant machines into those 2 groups, I have left the servers un assigned but when I go to view reports it isnt picking up any machines to view the status of what updates they need or which ones failed etc. I have tried checking the boxes and clicking apply and using the plus symbol to expand the view but nothing shows up at all. What am I missing ( aside from pebkac lol )
Geoff Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Have the machines successfully reported in? or have they just been detected? (You can check this by looking at the 'last status report' column).
mac_shinobi Posted April 18, 2007 Author Posted April 18, 2007 Most of them have a date and time of when they last reported in ( aside from the odd few which have a blue icon with an i.
mac_shinobi Posted April 18, 2007 Author Posted April 18, 2007 Just a quick screen shot of them reported in
Geoff Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 You should get info for the ones that don't have the blue 'i'.
mac_shinobi Posted April 18, 2007 Author Posted April 18, 2007 The only thing that I can think of is that as I am synchronising to get the updates that the only time it shows anything up is if i check the unknown checkbox otherwise nothing shows up on the status of updates report.
Geoff Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Have you approved the updates for detection/installation/etc?
mac_shinobi Posted April 18, 2007 Author Posted April 18, 2007 I think currently they are only detected as I wasnt sure when I should do that considering it is synching to download the updates etc. How do you sort them so that it divides the updates into xp, 2k and 2003 updates so that I can go through them that way and approve only the ones I want to install ?
mac_shinobi Posted April 18, 2007 Author Posted April 18, 2007 where does it show or walk through on how to make a custom filter ?
kingswood Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 where does it show or walk through on how to make a custom filter ? If you check the help file it tells you there. But if you want a quick overview: 1. Change to Updates 2. In the left column choose from "Products and Calssifications" to create a "Custom" filter 3. Click "Change Custom View" and then define your criteria. The update screen will then filter by your criteria rather than the defaults. You can then change the approval status, synchronisation and search by text keys etc. Paul
