Document Cameras

Howdy!

 

English teachers are looking document cameras and are asking our advice, but tbh I've never come across them before. They have been recomeneded by county This unit!

 

Does anyone have any recommnedations or specs we should be looking for, does anyone use these types of hardware?

If you mean the desktop cameras mounted 1ft above the desk base,connected inline with a projector - then they are great.

When they were 1st out the ones that gave good enough quaility were too expensive and the cheap ones wern't good enough.

 

But the AverVision products around £250 give a good picture.

 

At my schools with IWBs/Projectors and with a bit of money and a teacher who's reluctant to scan in documents prior to lessons, I highly recommend them and would try to make them part of a standard new install (if I hadn't got IWBs practically everywhere now )

 

Only got 3 so far in 2 schools though (not many with the money but hoping to get more this year)

It's basically a glorified overhead projector if you just use it for documents.

 

The science department have one that they use for dissection. Point it at whatever you're dissecting and play it in big on the screen.

 

I should imagine it'd be useful for demonstrating the innards of a computer for ICT or computing classes.

 

As for where to buy them...have you looked on RapidElectronics. They have all sorts of useful stuff. I'm not sure that's where the science dept. got it from but it could well have been. Failing that maybe the Philip Harris catalogue.

I'll have a nose around the web a bit more and see what comes up.

English want to use them to show students work, essays etc.

Whatever you do - don't buy cheap :!:

 

The cheap ones that I've seen (<£200) are just USB webcams mounted on a arm - the proper ones go inline with your VGA projector lead (like a splitter box) so the video gets as direct as possible from the lens to the projector.
