Should there be anything else in the dns? i.e. other servers/ pc's?

I m abit confused by how post is going, when you're dcpromo'ing are you making this a new forest or part of a current domain?

Its all new, its a home test domain, there are no other domains.

Its pointing to Virgin Media DNSs for internet and my superhub as a gateway only.

There are no other servers or PCs that need IPs yet, they are all being served by static IPs.

The USB memory stick I was using is poop I think, I went for another install with a fresh download and it started throwing driver corruption errors.

Doing a fresh install on a different usb, seems to be quicker too.

That uses an AMD chipset right? What hard drive mode are the SATA disks in RAID/AHCI?

What RAID driver version are you using? Is it v3.2.1540.75 ?

There are no drives in the RAID, they haven't been delivered yet (thanks scan....) just the 250Gb drive that comes with the system moved to an aux SATA port

And yes AMD

Did you need to load any storage drivers to install windows on the single drive, is it in AHCI mode in the BIOS do you know?

This problem is just like one I spent ages trying to track down and it was an AMD AHCI/RAID driver issue.

No no extra drivers, it gets passed the green scroll loading screen now and sits at a black screen with white mouse cursor but goes no further.

If I restart it goes into recovery mode.

If I dont DCpromo and just have DNS and DHCP its fine.

I am pretty sure you are having the problem I had, try and set the SATA controller to AHCI or RAID and use the storage driver here Software Posting

Another way to test if it is the same isssue is to see if it happens on 2003 R2, you will be able to run dcpromo but after restarting you would get an lsas error message.
