Tablet PC Software

At my school I am lucky enough to have Tablet PC to help me go about my daily business. However, at the moment I really just use it as a glorified notepad, and as a means of RDP-ing into the server.

 

Does anyone know of any good software that I could use on it to make it even more useful?

Bizarrely, I have OneNote and started using it - organizing myself to the nines! However, after a few weeks I found I was making most of my notes on Windows Journal. Maybe I should be more disciplined.

Get yourself a USB-serial adapter so that you can connect to serial consoles on your switches and the like - a MUST HAVE piece of kit.

 

Purchase Visio or download Dia so that you can draw pretty diagrams of process flow and your network layout.

 

Neither of these are really tablet specific but they are must have tools.

Speaking of which (well, not really, but it's my topic so I'll do what I like) do you, or anyone else, no of a way of getting a google-maps-style diagram that would enable me to view a diagram of the the school and then zoom in so that I could view individual aspects of each room (or even computer)?

@spdge: Nagios can do this and there is a plugin for Google maps... obviously on such a local scale Goolge maps wouldn't be much good.

 

With Nagios you can specify the layout of the icons. I love Nagios but only use it down to switches and printers/servers (didn't see the point of going any further).

As a quick aside, talking of the USB - RS232 adapter. One of the things that attracted me to my thinkpad was that i thought it had an RS232 port on it. It doesnt

 

But it is good and light and as Ric_ says...very useful for dragging around and configuring routers and switches and the like. Also makes good for testing interactive whiteboards.

 

Other recommended software is NetStumbler. Good to walk around the school with it in scan mode and check what your WiFi is doing and whether there's any local unsecured wifi networks that the kids could hop onto and get unfiltered internet access etc etc.

Thanks, I've been looking for something like that - we have some serious holes in our Wi-fi network (clearly, I hadn't been looking very hard).

 

However, I think the first thing that I will getting is some more RAM for the tablet, since it currently has quite a pathetically small amount.
