HaleStorm Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 is there an issue with using outlook through the YHGfL system? i cannot get it to connect to the webmail servers we use, is there a solution to this? i have checked all the server settings and they are all correct
bladedanny Posted September 5, 2011 Posted September 5, 2011 I don't have any problems connecting to gmail through outlook 2010. As long as the proxy is defined in IE. I have noticed however that using a .pac file to define the proxy doesn't work very well with other applications like outlook.
HaleStorm Posted September 5, 2011 Author Posted September 5, 2011 Ive just got the proxy set in IE and it doesn't work for me, its not the end of the world because i only wanted it to try out using outlook for when we move to Civica at christmas. Looks like i will just have to learn
ayoward Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 Ive just got the proxy set in IE and it doesn't work for me, its not the end of the world because i only wanted it to try out using outlook for when we move to Civica at christmas. Looks like i will just have to learn Get it logged with Thales and we'll look into it for you. I note that it isn't one of the topics on our support page FAQ and I think it probably should be, so I'll have that rectified as well.
HaleStorm Posted September 6, 2011 Author Posted September 6, 2011 Thanks I'll get that logged some time this morning
HaleStorm Posted September 6, 2011 Author Posted September 6, 2011 @Dannyblade did you have to do anything special to get the SMTP working, as we can now get incoming mail but outgoing still wont connect? cheers
bladedanny Posted September 6, 2011 Posted September 6, 2011 What SMTP server are you using? Whenever configuring email I always use smtp.yhgfl.net rather than say google's smtp server. Seems to usually work. Standard port for smtp.yhgfl.net (25?)
ayoward Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 What SMTP server are you using? Whenever configuring email I always use smtp.yhgfl.net rather than say google's smtp server. Seems to usually work. Standard port for smtp.yhgfl.net (25?) The Grid is configured to only allow SMTP outbound through smtp.yhgfl.net. This enables us to make sure it goes through our sendmail servers running mailscanner and our Sophos Mail appliances which should prevent accidental spam or virus spread from within the grid outbound. We would be very quickly blacklisted (has happened before) by the mail relays of the major ISPs were we to inadvertently start sending out malicious mail traffic which would kill outbound e-mail for the whole Grid and its connected schools. There should be more detail here: SMTP relay / Support guides / Support / YHGfL - YHGfL
HaleStorm Posted September 7, 2011 Author Posted September 7, 2011 Thats why i couldn't get it to work, need to do som bug hunting at my end because the pop server connection has stopped working now....hopefully when i figured out what i've cocked up it will be all happy and smiley
HaleStorm Posted September 8, 2011 Author Posted September 8, 2011 My other question is...where has the YHGfL support wiki gone? i tried to get to it and its not there anymore....has it moved? 1
mwalpole Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 Hi Halestorm, We have decided to relocate the information from the old wiki to Support - YHGfL - YHGfL along with a lot of new information which we hope will be helpful. We are still developing the support page, so please let us know if there is anything you would want us to put on there. Marc
HaleStorm Posted September 9, 2011 Author Posted September 9, 2011 Thanks for that Marc, the last thing is about the pop mail servers not seeming to connect for us, is it an issue on our line where they are blocked or possibly an issue due to the network infrastructure shifting to Thales? as ther other day we could recieve mail into outlook but no outbound (obviouslty having the wrong smtp) but now we cannot even recieve mail through pop.gmail.com thanks 1
mwalpole Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 Hi Halestorm, Would it be possible to log this to Thales as Andrew mentioned earlier? [or Civica if you work at a BSF school] Regards Marc
HaleStorm Posted September 9, 2011 Author Posted September 9, 2011 We have logged it but not heard anything from them, just the automated "a ticket has been generated" e-mail, i will get my colleuge to give them a ring and chase it up, as he logged the call cheers marc
mwalpole Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 You should have an INC number on an email back from us once we receive it. Regards Marc 1
