BatchFile Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 One of our 3 DCs is becoming overworked by it's other duties and to relieve the situation I want to stop it being a DC - what I'm not certain of is what the consequences may be. The other 2 DCs are more than capable of servicing the logons etc, but what I'm not so sure of is what happens to the users (not many as it's the hols and only 1 in 3 will have been logged in by that server anyway) and computers that have been authenticated by that DC. Long story short - can I just uninstall AD from this server and will the rest just take over? it doesn't have any of the FSMO roles or anything, it's just a DC (2003 R2)
Michael Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 If you're 100% sure that it has no FSMO roles, then you can run dcpromo and demote it. As to whether this'll make the server run any faster, no I don't believe so. DC services don't really use up that many resources. Typically it's SQL that eats up server resources quickly. A memory upgrade can and does make all the difference, unless you're already running 4GB on 2003 R2? 1
