Airprint on Server 2003

Hi all,

 

I didn't know where to post this so mods please move if needed.

 

We now have 37 iPad 2s in school and have been using iPad 1s for about a year with great success. I was asked the question today about whether the iPads could print to our printers. I've followed online instructions and the iPads can now see the printers that are shared on our Server 2003 print server, however, when I press to print to any of the printers the iPad asks for a username & password. I've tried every type of combination and am having no such luck (i.e. username & password, domain\username & password, username@domain & password, domain.local\username & password)

 

Has anyone else tried this and got around the problem? or is it (like I'm expecting) not possible on Server 2003?

2003 should not make a difference, the iPad support is going to be just as suspect under a 2008 server. Is the print server also a domain controller and are you sharing them by SMB or the Apple shareing stuff that you could install under 2003?

Ah right ok. The domain controller is run from our 2008 R2 server. The 2003 server just acts as a print server and sharing is done in the conventional way then I've added the bonjour & airprint services which are running fine by the looks of it.

 

Which apple sharing stuff are you refering to?

Ok I've installed those and rebooted the server. Still no joy :-/

Quadrupal eeek, just looked at this Fabien's IT security diary: Printing from an iPhone, iPad or Mac using AirPrint, Bonjour in an Active Directory domain

 

Have you given all the users huge levels of control over the print server as specified in the above document. Really they should just demand that everyone be domain administrators and be done with it.

 

 

EDIT: Also is your internal domain a .local as it looks like bonjure is used for auth which uses .local and will conflict. Also have you tried with local credentials on the print server as it may not be linking to AD for auth.

Ok I've followed Fabien's guide. I've allowed "Everyone" "Print" "Manage Printers" & "Manage Documents" on the printers security settings. Fabien goes more indepth regarding permissions but I cant see where these options are. I've created the new GPO with the local security policy changes as he mentions but still no joy.

 

Our domain is .local so I'm right in thinking that this shouldn't be an issue?

Ok I've come up with a temporary solution. I've created a local user on the 2003 Server called "ipad". Given it admin rights and it allows it to print

Try enabling the local guest account on the server. I had similar as you on a 2008 box. When i enabled the local guest account it did the trick. When you do that set everyone permission to print on the printer.

Try giving it a password, any will do. Also set so the password never expires.

Yikes Apple 'security' rears its ugly head again. Its like an unwanted proctology exam to get stuff working with their toys.

You will not be able to use any combination of domain user/password for this to work. To make it work you need to use the computers local admin account and password. If you are sharing from a domain member computer, then use the local admin account on that computer.

If you have a spare Mac, you could setup the printers on that and use Printopia.

 

Edit. FingerPrint is another alternative. There's a Windows version available too.
