Well got another wonderful problem with solus3.

Just done a server migration and everything was working. Installed solus3 and tested... All ok.

Installed summer upgrade and now got a strange issue. Some reports will run and some come up with the error "path not found"

Anyone got any ideas?

Also got one machine I can't install sims onto. Solid agent is on it but when sending the upgrades it says "object already exists"

Have uninstalled sims and solus agent but still says it. Any ideas?

No, it's not SOLUS3 fault.

Just done a server migration and everything was working

I'm guessing not, you haven't moved DocStorage correctly. Firstly, on the old server open cmd, goto c:\program files (x86)\sims\sims .net document server (or c:\program files\sims\sims .net document server) then run dmconfig, jot down the docstorage directory.

Now go to that path, open the folder called the server name

Go into that folder, should have one called the sql instance name - normally sims2008

In that folder, you should have one for each SIMS database called the same as the database name, normally just one called SIMS. Copy those\that folder to the new server in the docstorage folder - you should have a note of this as you've entered it during the install - if not open cmd and repeat the above step to get the path.

Bingo - you reports will run - assuming you've done it right.

I'm guess SOLUS3 has two records for the machines or something, log it with Capita\LA.

Cheers for the reply matt.

Actually docstorage was setup correctly. For some reason i had to copy the reportstempfolder back into the users profile over writing the current one and thats sorted the problem. So no i had done the migration correctly. Also it was working fine before i did the update with solus3 so something must of changed with the update. Also worked fine at all the other migrations ive done this summer.

As for the object already exists Capita havent a clue why its happening. Been on the phone to them all day with no resolution and told that a developer of solus3 will have to ring me about it.

Ive took the machine off the domain, delete dns records, renamed the machine, uninstalled solus agent, removed sims off the machine, put the machine back on the domain and tried again but still the same. Works fine on all the other machines. Apparently that error occurs when the user to install sims on a machine thats not on the same domain.

Have been searching to see if there is somewhere that has the information about what machines are on the solus3 database but couldnt find anything.

Matt you got any ideas?

I would have uninstall the SOLUS3 agent before removing it off the domain, just encase it updates the DS with the new name. So you get "object already exists" once you've install the SOLUS3 agent and you're deploying SIMS to it?

Yeah tried removing agent and installing it again but no joy. Did that before removing from domain.

It installs the agent fine but won't deploy sims.

Wish there was a way to just install sims manually :(

Ah!!! Glad I'm not the only one! We've been having to recommend redeploying Summer 11 to get it onto the workstations. I've asked for something like SMS where on the workstation you can install advertised packages - ie SIMS, FMS, Discover - assuming you've made them avalible for manual installation! It'll be good if you need to reinstall SIMS for whatever reason.

I have to admit, I normally download the latest SIMSApplicationSetup manually just so I can do it the old fashioned, not that I don't have complete faith in SOLUS3 :D

How can i get hold of the simssapplicationsetup?

Using solus2?

I second this, how do you get the SIMS application setup?

I hate having to let Solus3 try and redeploy everything just to install SIMS on to one new workstation at the moment!

The only way of reinstalling SIMS on a workstation (because 2 helpful people left SIMS open when they should have closed it so the upgrade only partly completed) was to remove the target definition from the workstation, leaving the solus agent installed, then recreating the target definition and once again deploying the summer upgrade.

What do you mean remove target definition?

Will have a look tomorrow to make certain what I'm saying is right, but if you go to your list of Workstations and view the details of one with an issue, you can click on the installation definition ie. SIMS Workstation and on the left hand side remove that type from it. If it's the only type it will ask you if you want to remove the Agent as well but say no to that.

Then go back to where you select your SIMS workstation again and add that particular machine again. Then when you redploy the summer update, that particular machine will not see it's self as having installed the update and redeploy it.

Sorry for the delayed response, missed the reply. :)

As im having to do this, I will post up my VBS scripts for installing SIMS the old fashioned way. Does a text file version check, then runs each setup silently.

Running the installers silently would be better - it checks every file it upgraded. I've had a cases where Pulsar has updated but not all the dll and re-running the installer gets it upgraded.

Using solus2?

On the server in the setups folder. This is how it was done the old SOLUS 2 way, i'm not if you install the server with SOLUS 3 (if that's even possible) if there is a SETUPS folder, but you can get one off the latest update CD.

Usually it's the S drive.

Nice script @TheScarfedOne - do you run that on startup? It seemed like there were a couple of places that needed user input, though one of them was on a countdown.

I have an application that i compiled that does similar, but with less variables. It just reads the version number of the local and remote simsappssetups file, local one from the simsload.ini file, and then compares. If it's outdated, then it just runs the simsload. It basically does what simsload does, but with an intercept to let the user choose if they want to allow upgrade.

It was designed for laptop users, so they would get informed that their machine needed an upgrade, but would give them the choice of whether to do it straight away (usually on wireless) or go and plug in first.

I haven't tested yours out, but looking at the code, i don't have a local C:\sims folder, though i know i used to have one, same on another machine.

It's hard coded with the S: mapped drive, which should be fine for most, but it goes to a 'current' folder within, which i'm guess is something you've created...?

I don't mean to pick holes, just trying to foresee possible issues if someone wanted to borrow it.

Ah yes - few good pointers there @vikpaw. I was doing such a quick add that forgot to include the details on how to use...

The C:\SIMS folder was created on the machine just to hold the SimsVersion.txt check file the script uses. This can really be anywhere - I just didnt want to junk up the main program files folder any more. The S:\ is what Capita usually want to coded it to use that. However, you could change this in the section at the top where the variables are declared. This will change where the setups are read from. The same with the "Current" folder. This allowed us to choose when the setup files where available and separate out from the main setup files. I cant remember why I did this, as having just implemented it again - Ive removed that option.

Yep - used that on startup on workstations, and as a shortcut (with elevated privs) on the start menu for laptops. There isnt a countdown in there anymore as far as I can tell, but Ive programmed on in on the message box warning what is about to happen. Wish could add a progress bar or a % bar to it tho.

Glad you like :-)
