MatthewL Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 Which thin clients does anyone recommend? It's all new to me but want to have a look at them. Looking at connecting to Citrix and or Terminal Server. More for personal research than anything and proof of concept.

Before we go any further I would like to just probe you a little bit more on Citrix, are you looking at Xen Desktop or XenApp or more traditional Citrix (ala TS) just so folks can help as to whether you can use 'any' RDP client or whether you need something a bit more special with HDX or whatever. Lots and lots of options depending upon your needs
m25man Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 I see that the "Thin PC" ISO is available from the Microsoft Licensing Portal in the Software Assurance Section along with an MAK key (that I didnt seem to need). This seems pretty slick if you have a bunch of old PC's you need to re-purpose. I have been able to roll it out by WDS but testing is still early doors... I was thinking about using this OS on some of the cheap Acer Revo's (the ones with Linpus Linux) if they ever come back into stock again...

I am on one of my learning spree's again and want to know more about them and potentially want to implement it where I am in certain areas.
FN-GM Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 I have dealt with Wyse & HP thin clients and personally i like the HP ones better. Had issues with the wyse ones and memory leaks. Also i dont like that fact you have to host config files on an FTP server for wyse thin clients. HP ones have never skipped a beat.

kmount Posted July 31, 2011 Posted July 31, 2011 (edited) Before you jump in too far think about your backend, if you're going 2008R2 RDS does the device you're buying support the added functionality in RDP7/7.1? Wyse has TCX for improved multimedia (at a cost) which might be of interest. IGEL offers some good all rounder functionality including RemoteFX. Sun Ray offers the most flexible system I've ever found (because you have control at the session layer before the RDS) Axel devices are compact and do the job. NComputing L300's do full screen video that's pretty impressive for the cost of the little box compared to a HDX/PCoIP device. There's so many devices it largely depends on what your needs are, USB, smart cards, etc etc. Well worth looking into seriously. Edited July 31, 2011 by kmount 1

I will only be playing with my 2003 setup, only got one or two 2008 servers at work and I can't say that I am a fan to be honest. I will have a look on eBay to pick one up cheap. Cheers once again.

We use them with our Kaviza VDI (which is based upon Citrix HDX) and can't complain. The cheap Linux ones go for about £180-£190 as well and all come with a 3 year warranty.
CyberNerd Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 I'd recommend rolling your own thin clients. We buy Atom mini ITX motherboards (about £45) a 2GB stick of RAM (way overkill for a TC, but they can double up as linux/XP boxes if necessary) and an ITX case (another £30-£40, mounts on the back of a LCD display). For about £110 you get a PXE booting thin client that is way faster than most of the others on the market. We boot them with custom Thinstation and they connect to Citrix (or TS). They take about 15min to build and have been very reliable.
