Now I feel so old.

My first PC was DOS. The school librarian "couldn't get it to work" so he gave it to me. I used to write school essays with the edit command.

 

It had Windows 3.1 on it but that didn't work properly as one of the INI files sat in a corrupt Hard Disk sector.

Remember the fine art of tuning the config.sys? DOS was always HIGH, and invariably with UMB. EMM386 with EMS was bad form, unless of course you needed expanded memory. And to think somebody designed that mess?

I could say the same about Windows 7 folder redirection libraries, desktop.ini files and roaming profiles... some things never change

It's always been to maintain backwards compatibility. Say what you like about Apple, their approach of throwing out all the old stuff has its advantages even if it does seem like they're throwing out the baby with the bathwater!
