Can I convert a VirtualPC to XPMode

I'm replacing 7 teacher desktop machines and the new ones are Win7 Pro.

I've sucessfully used Disk2vhd to convert the Y6 old XP machine to a VirtualPC but I'd like to make this VM the default XPMode one.

 

Anyone done this - is it possible?

Should be possible, kind of. The XP mode stuff is just a VHD but with special extentions installed. Your XP image will obviously not have access to these bundled extentions so stuff like seamless windows and VM to host app publishing would not work.

 

Your best bet may be customing a default XPM VHD then distributing that to each PC.

Can you not put the windows xp mode on the windows 7 and then mount the vhd as a virtual os like you did with virtual pc on windows xp. We used this when I was on some of the microsoft courses to run windows xp, windows 7 2003 and 2008. I admit running so many virtual machines on a pc made it very slow but it did work.

I found some stuff in the book I was reading on Holiday regarding what you are trying to do. Basically you can install the integration features, apply the update to allow remote app and then sysprep the image. Then you put the VHD where you wan't it and use a script called CreateVirtualMachine.wsf which is supposedly available from MS.

 

I have no idea if this works as I have just read about it.

If not, is it is just data you need? How about just adding the drive from your existing VHDs to the default XP mode one and customising from there.

A patch to enable RemoteApp support can be downloaded here:

 

• For XP VMs: An update is available that adds support for RemoteApp to Windows XP SP3 virtual machines on a Windows 7-based computer (KB961741)
  
• For Vista VMs: An update that adds RemoteApp support is available for Windows Vista-based virtual machines that are running on Windows 7-based computers (KB961742)
  

Install that on the machine you've created, along with the normal Virtual PC integration components, and it basically does the same thing as the XP Mode image.

Got it working - yippee (Thanks to Chris and AngryT)

 

Basically used Disk2vhd to make a virtual disc of the old classroom computer C Drive.

Copied that to new Win7 Machine

Create new Virtual Machine using this vhd.

Run the remoteapp for XPSP3.

Install Integration Components (via Virtual CD Drive in the XP VirtualPC - NOT VIA THE TOOLS MENU!!!!)

Enable Integration Features (Via Tools menu )

Put shortcuts to any apps you want to run in WIn7 in the all users prog start menu on the XP VirtualPC.

All the old junk that would take forever (if at possible) to install and run in Win7 now available as a virtual app in WIn7

 

I've also shared the old XP VM my docs and put shortcut to it in Win7 Documents to enable access to files between the two machines.

One modification (after doing another machine)

 

Try installing integration features via tools menu - IF it doesn't seem to work - then try going by a virtual CD drive that should be in My Computer.
