Start Menu Items - Remove RDC

I've made a Windows 7 image with copy profile in sysprep, but for some annoying reason the start menu that is used for first time login includes Remote Desktop Connection and other items that I really don't want students to be accessing. I can disallow the use with software restrictions but how do I customize the start menu like I did in XP days and have it hold via default user? ( I understand that these types of items don't get held for all users during the copy profile stage in sysprep)

So I've found items live in:

 

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

 

If I modify this during my image prep will it hold through the sysprep process?

couldnt you just run a logon/startup script that attrib +h's the offending files?

I used a redirected start menu and set the policy to hide the local one. Seems to do the trick.

I thought I should reply back that I got some of the items in the start menu fixed. I'm going to try to image and clean the start menu to see if it holds through a sysprep.

 

FWIW, I had this policy set by accident which took accessories and a bunch of normal items out of the start menu. Setting it to not configured fixed that portion of my problems.

 

User Configuration-->Policies-->Administrative Templates-->Start Menu and Taskbar-->Remove user's folders from the Start Menu
That setting was set to enable and as soon as I set it to disable or not configured our users start menu now had the 'Accessories', 'Maintenance', 'Startup', and other icons at the root of the start menu that were missing such as IE.

Make sure you don't decide to use roaming profiles or you'll find with redirected startmenus that you cant click on any icons, they just do nothing.

to fix that I had to write a script to delete the cookies folder in the users local roaming app data microsoft windows folder on logoff. Then had to apply a GPO that prevents cookies folder from being part of the roaming profile...was a real headache actually.. Why the cookies folder had anything to do with the windows 7 start menu I have no idea.. but it did..
