GREED Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Can someone give me the major differences between 2008 and R2, other than it allows the connections (in AD) for Windows 7, and that it is 64 bit only... Ta! 1
andrew-virtusolve Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 The answer is LOTS and LITTLE depending on what you want to do with the platform. Terminal Services got a massive upgrade on R2 becoming Remote Desktop Services The kernel was unified with Windows 7 so compatibility of drivers and stuff is improved Included version of Hyper-V was new and finally got the availability features of Xen and VMware Applocker was introduced Could go on all day, but here is a good place to start... Windows Server 2008 R2: What's New Is the question you are asking 'Is it worth upgrading from 2008? to 2008R2' The answer then would be mixed based on what you want to achieve
featured_spectre Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 I would advocate upgrading from 2008 to 2008R2, because everything you can do on 2008, you can do on 2008R2, and it would not hurt to upgrade to 2008R2. You can always run one side by side and you can see the comparison
ChrisMiles Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Windows 2008 r2 is build off the windows 7 core, whereas 2008 is from the vista core << biggest reason to upgrade if you ask me
GREED Posted July 22, 2011 Author Posted July 22, 2011 My question is more on the study side to be honest. I have apprentices studying towards 2008 R2 exams, but there is no material available for this, and they are using 2008 stuff currently.
featured_spectre Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 In that respect its similar, but there a few differences with gpos and such like 1
featured_spectre Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 No worries. A word of warning they may get a few answers wrong due to the subtle differences....
ChrisH Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 (edited) Tbh I have taken a few of the so called R2 2008 exams and they talk about 2008 R2 and windows 7 but most of the content is really 2008 material, they have just added R2. As far of the exams go the extra things to study on are Branchcache, direct access and the fact R2 can back up to a network location etc. Oh and btw the R2 books are being released at the moment. GREED Posted July 25, 2011 Author Posted July 25, 2011 Thanks Chris that is a big help. My concerns have been transferred slight due to one of my guys failing his retake of Win 7 680... NOT GOOD NEWS!
featured_spectre Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Failed the retake? when you fail the exam first time round it tells you where to brush up...if he failed to do that then whip him (literally) lol

jtotheb Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 My question is more on the study side to be honest. I have apprentices studying towards 2008 R2 exams, but there is no material available for this, and they are using 2008 stuff currently. If they're using the original MS Press books this is a good addition http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/c/0/5c0bd0ab-040d-4c56-a60b-661001012dda/windows_server_2008_r2_e-book.pdf The R2 books for the 70-642 and 70-640 have recently come out and are available (make sure you get the 2nd edition). The R2 version of 70-646 keeps getting pushed back and is now due out in August. It is possible to do the exams with the original material and the ebook (+ labbing and working on R2 obviously) as it's how I had to do it, but if they'd feel more comfortable with the whole R2 kit and kaboodle it's out now. The exam will definitely feature R2 questions in some shape or form. 1
chrisbrown Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 The R2 books are out and definitely worth getting. I've sat 70-642 and am studying for 70-640. The exams for both are very R2ey..and R2 is quite different to 2008, under the hood. Also - I don't know where you decided that "it allows the connections (in AD) for Windows 7"...That's simply not true.
GREED Posted August 5, 2011 Author Posted August 5, 2011 @Chris Thank for the heads up. To answer your point, I have not decided anything, rather this is what I know of and obviously from my posts and pleading for help is very little. What I understand, which is how I should have placed this, is that Server 2008 AD had issuse with Windows 7 PCs.
chrisbrown Posted August 6, 2011 Posted August 6, 2011 @Chris Thank for the heads up. What I understand, which is how I should have placed this, is that Server 2008 AD had issuse with Windows 7 PCs. Not exactly... You could happily run Win7 machines connected to a Windows 2003 Forest/Domain Functional level. Some people will tell you you need 2008 for Vista and 2008 R2 for 7...but likely what they mean is that "2008 and R2 include the group policy templates by default for their counterpart desktop operating systems". That, and to edit/create certain group policies you must be logged onto a box with GPMC running on 2008 R2/7/2008/Vista.
GREED Posted August 6, 2011 Author Posted August 6, 2011 Thank you for the corrected information Chris.
chrisbrown Posted August 7, 2011 Posted August 7, 2011 Sorry if I seemed blunt - I get pointed when I'm trying to write quickly and concisely
