Own DNS Servers?

Anybody host the DNS for their school domains them selfs?

 

Changing ISP, and they cannot host .sch.uk domains, so was thinking of having the tag changed to the neutral NOMINET tag and then having the name server IP's pointing to 2 of our public ones with Windows DNS Server installed.

Tbh I wouldnt myself, if you have any net issues everything will drop off badly.

EduGeek uses easydns but may have to mail them to ask about sch.uk domains. They are cheap and very very reliable.

If you are making yourself Primary DNS then make sure you have an alternative secondary DNS elsewhere. In a previous school we have been both and had issues when the connection was flaky. It doesn't matter who do your DNS as long as the Registrar can point to them.

Doesn't you LEA have their own DNS servers? In Swansea we do and offer the ability to host .sch.uk domains for schools in the County.Gareth

Why you say "flakey" connection, do you mean one that goes down/unrealiable?

 

Our LEA likes to give lots of money to RM, then we get charged £50 a time for changes to our DNS records. Such great contracts our county agree on our behalf (not). Our new connection will still be a fibre leased line, with ADSL failover from Zen. Getting 32 Public IP's so can give 2 up for DNS no problem.

 

I am just trying to understand downside to handling the DNS querys onsite, before hunting down somewhere that will host .sch.uk .Does not seem to be much in terms of discussion on the internet on the subject , well not that i can find.
