Random weird SD card reader issue

I've got a random USB memory card reader that when plugged into my Windows 7 machine works fine with SD cards.

 

However, when it is plugged into a specific XP laptop, the device is recognised, but when a card is plugged in, drives are empty.

 

Anyone got any ideas? I am thinking I may end up just wiping and starting again on it.

As it is a specific XP laptop have you tried swapping the HDD from the 'faulty' laptop with another XP laptop [checking if the problem lies with Windows or with the laptop hardware]
