Having created a Year 7 distribution group on Outlook Live [Live@Edu] I find that our staff cannot send to this list [Our staff are not on Live@Edu but on our own Exchange server and on a separate domain]

Does anyone else have a similar setup?

Has anyone else solved this problem?

I ask because looking at 'Domains & Protection' only tells me that the domain is hosted with no other configuration options available.

Thanks.

1. Check the restrictions on the DL and see if user are required to be authenticated.

2. What error do you get or NDR?

NDR (Non delivery report [?]) states:

#< #5.7.1 smtp;550 5.7.1 RESOLVER.RST.AuthRequired; authentication required>

I am guessing that our staff are not allowed to E-Mail the distribution list I have created [despite them being able to send to individuals or a number of individuals as a list]

Do I need to be able to set the permissions for the distribution list? If I do how do I do that without access to the Exchange server that drives/controls this?

Thanks.

1. Yes, you need to set permission for staff to be able to send. You can either remove authentication or set it.

2. To remove you must have access to the live@edu console right,

1. Click the Distribution Group name as you want to set

#2. Click the "Properties"

#3. Click the "Mail Flow Settings" Tab

#4. Click the "Message Delivery Restrictions" item

#5. Click the "Properties..." button

#6. Uncheck the "Require that all senders are authenticated" item

#7. Click "OK" button

#8. Click "OK" button again

I don't have the sort of access that you would with an Exchange server.

This is the only other menu I can get apart from the User Manager interface:

Thanks!

Sorted now. Not the most intuitive interface I feel. Also I have to allow all mail to go through to get this to work.

Nevertheless what we have now is a start. Thanks again.

Np,

What you mean you have to allow all mailto go thought to get this to work?

Is there a concern?

Yes. I would have liked to restrict the students to only receive E-Mail from their peers and our teachers [to prevent spam, Viagra ads and the like getting through]

I had hoped that over time I could relax, but not remove, the blocks. However what we have is all or nothing.

Your MX records, where are they poiting, surely most of this would be picked up by the AV/AS your using?

Also, if you want, instead of removing authenticated users, what you can do is create another DL. Create contacts for your staff, then add these contacts to the DL, specify that DL so message are only received from those in the DL. You can if you wish ass the students to that DL too.

This way only users/contacts in that DL can send to that DL.
