Netbooks

SLT want us to get a set of 8 netbooks for each of the three year groups, using Open Office. The idea is that there will be an access point with each set and the teacher will plug that into a port in their classroom. Is anyone using a similar setup and are their any pitfalls.recommendations?

I'm just setting up some netbooks (Eee PCs - older 901 models with 4GB SSDs) with a customised copy of Debian which, so far, has been easier that I was expecting. Adding a light-weight GUI to a base text-only install is easy enough (just install X Windows and XFCE) and having the wireless configured via a config file rather than a GUI tool means there's nothing for pupils to mess around with or reconfigure - the wireless connects at boot time and that's it. We have our machines load up Chromium web browser in kiosk mode, but there's no reason why you couldn't have Open Office load instead. Seemingly XFCE can be configured so there's no start menu or anything else, so you could have an XFCE startup script simply sit in a loop and run Open Office - if a pupil quits it just restarts.
