Windows 7 Printers issue - cannot connect to the printer. Access is denied

Hello all,

 

We're testing out the new server 2008 r2 with win 7 combination and so far everything is working fine. We have now come to test the printer sharing side of things and we hit a stumbling block. Basically we got a shared printer on the server (also a dc) with both the windows 7 32bit driver and 64bit driver from the manufacturer.

 

When the standard users are allocated to the shared printer it doen't work and gives the error:

 

winodws cannot connect to the printer. access is denied. I've been looking through various threads on the forums on the net but so far nothing has worked. So far we have tried:

 

on computer GPO we have the Point and print restrictions set to disabled

 

on the Computer GPO we also have disabled the "Prevent users to install printer drivers"

 

on computer gpo we have set also set "allow non-administrators to install drivers for these device setup classes" and have added in the Printers GUIDS

 

but it still does not work.

 

If i login an admin and add a printer its working fine which makes me thing its got the be the correct drivers and probably some permissions but just haven't been able to nail it down.

 

Any ideas??

Under point and print restrictions:

 

 

Point and Print Restrictions Enabled

Users can only point and print to these servers: Disabled

Enter fully qualified server names separated by semicolons

Users can only point and print to machines in their forest Disabled

 

Security Prompts:

When installing drivers for a new connection: Do not show warning or elevation prompt

When updating drivers for an existing connection: Do not show warning or elevation prompt

This setting only applies to:

Windows Vista and later

 

 

User Configuration (Enabled)hide

No settings defined.

HI I had this problem and only managed to solve it with print manager and deploy the printer through gpo. on windows 7 machine. I gave up on using scripts.

Hi Guys,

 

Thanks for your advice, we've fixed it by looking at the permissions on the print server properties. For everyone the "Print" and "View" must be ticked otherwise the access denied error may happen. Now this is the default setting on server 2008 R2 but when testing we must have tinkered with it when it was originally not working but this was i think due to not having the point and print restrictions disabled.

 

All working happily now on GPP, GPO and script methods.
