classlink 7 to vanilla

Hi All

We are looking to get rid of classlink 7 (and not before time) however it has served us well and still provides a fair few useful tools like disk quota management, applying printers to users or groups, a login from home and etc.

So my question is, have any of you been down this road already ? and if so what solutions did you come up with what worked what and didnt.

We ditched ClassLink7 some time ago now.

 

Disk space for students is controlled by File Server Resource Manager [We don't currently restrict our staff although we could and I think we should]

 

Printers are allocated on a by room basis when students logon and when staff logon they are allocated according to staff preferences [both of these are achieved using logon scripts]

 

Remote login is allowed using Sun Global Desktop [with support provided by The Cutter Project and Edugeek member @kmount .

 

User creation is via Active Directory, or when creating new users en masse we use Mikey Magic's Web Site - Active User Manager

 

All working well at the moment.

Windows 2008 Server does disk/fodler quotas via FSRM, printers can be added to users via GPO as well. Login from home would need the use of an RDP gateway and RDP if you want it done with a minimum of cost, if you prefer an more elegant solution you can use Ericom/2X/Oracle Global Desktop however Oracles prices have now made the cheapest (with decent functionality) remote access too expensive, Citrix is a contender now ;)unless Cutter can correct me on this? Ericom and 2X maybe your best bet if you want an easy to setup system with failover for a reasonable price.

We've done exactly the same as others that have posted, left Viglen about 2 years ago and have never looked back.

 

The only thing we do differently, is we use Salamander for our user creation. It sits there and when a person is added into Sims Salamander automatically creates them an AD account :-)

 

Just in case you don't know, Classlinks classroom management is actually a product called Netsupport which we've bought back in. Still a quality product which some additional features that aren't available in Classlink/Ranger/RM Tutor. Only advice on this, is to go to Netsupport directly for a quote.
